Happy Valentine’s Day

Day 3 Happy Valentine’s Day

Bible Lesson  about Jesus

Matthew 22:34-40 Jesus wants us to love God and love others.   He loves us so much He died for us.

Materials: Bibles, paper, scissors, markers

Greet students and open with prayer.

Dear Jesus,

Thank you for each student that is here today.  Help us to learn how important it is to love God and love others.  Amen

Lesson Intro:

Have students cut out hearts.   For younger students have folded paper with the half heart already drawn. Ask  What do these hearts make you think of? Allow a few responses and then move on to the Bible story.

Bible Lesson:

Today we are going learn about something Jesus taught in the Bible.  Are there any guesses about what we are going to learn? Allow guesses Here is a hint.  Jesus answered this when he was asked what was the greatest commandment.  Allow more guesses.  If someone answers correctly, praise them and then have everyone open to the scripture.  If not say Well let’s take a look in the Bible to see what Jesus said was the greatest commandment.  Open your Bibles to Matthew 22:34-40.  Read the verses and then ask.  What is the greatest commandment? Have a student share the answer (verse 37) What is the second greatest commandment? Have a student share the answer (verse 39)

Life Application:

Using large paper and markers be prepared to make two charts.   One with how to love God and one with how to love others.

How do we follow the greatest commandments in the Bible? Let’s make two lists.  On our first list we will put things that we can do to love God.  On our second list we will put things we can do to love others.  Who has something we can put on our lists. Call on a student. Older students could write on the list.  Have younger students share and have an adult write.   If it doesn’t come up before the end, point out that loving others is loving God.

Closing:

Today we talked about how Jesus wants us to love others, but there is something else that is just as important to remember.  We need to remember how much Jesus loves us.   Romans 5:8 says “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”   Jesus loves us so much that he died for us.  Students who attend services regularly will most likely be very aware of this, but if there are students who have not heard this before, please take time to explain how we all do wrong things and that the punishment is death.  Explain how Jesus paid the penalty so we can live forever with God in Heaven if we believe in Him.

It is also very important to remember that Jesus’s death was not the end.  Make sure you come back tomorrow “for the rest of the story.”

Extra time?

Cut more hearts or have students decorate the hearts they made.

Close in prayer:

Dear Jesus,

Thank you so much for loving each one of us.  Help us to show that love to others.  Amen
